Judy Garland en Robert Walker schitteren in deze opvoering over het verhaal van Jerome Kern, de briljante Broadway componist.
In zijn begin dagen verliep zijn carrière echter niet zo vlot, als waar hij beroemt door is geworden, dus zocht hij hulp bij ene Van Heflin. Deze herkende het talent en het potentieel in de worstelende songwriter. Zijn eerste suggestie was dat Kern zijn horizon moest verbreden. Dit advies sloeg hij niet in de wind en hij besluit naar Engeland te gaan, naar West End.
Hier krijgt hij het publiek op de banken en scoort hij hit na hit, zodat hij uiteindelijk in de spotlights van Broadway komt te staan en hij de beloning krijgt waar hij zo lang naar hunkerde.
De film opent en sluit met het fabuleuze 'SHOWBOAT' en wordt opgeluisterd door vele andere gedenkwaardige Kern liedjes. Opgevoerd door de tijdloze talenten van Judy Garland en Frank Sinatra en een uitblinkende support cast.
